through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we ▼

also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;

Not only that, but we ⁿrejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering ^oproduces endurance,

καυχώμεθα ἐν ταῖς θλίψεσιν, εἰδότες ὅτι ἡ θλῖψις ὑπομονὴν κατεργάζεται,

perseverance, character; and character, hope.

and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,

ἡ δὲ ὑπομονὴ δοκιμήν, ἡ δὲ δοκιμὴ ἐλπίδα.

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

ἡ δὲ ἐλπὶς οὐ καταισχύνει· ὅτι ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ θεοῦ ἐκκέχυται ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν διὰ πνεύματος ἁγίου τοῦ δοθέντος ἡμῖν.

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.

For ^swhile we were still weak, at the right time ^tChrist died for the ungodly.

ἔτι κατὰ καιρὸν ὑπὲρ ἀσεβῶν ἀπέθανεν.

Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.

For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—

μόλις γὰρ ὑπὲρ δικαίου τις ἀποθανεῖται· ὑπὲρ γὰρ τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ τάχα τις καὶ τολμᾷ ἀποθανεῖν·

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

συνίστησιν δὲ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἀγάπην εἰς ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς ὅτι ἔτι ἁμαρτωλῶν ὄντων ἡμῶν Χριστὸς ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἀπέθανεν.

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

Since, therefore, ^ywe have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from ^zthe wrath of God.

πολλῷ οὖν μᾶλλον δικαιωθέντες νῦν ἐν τῷ αἵματι αὐτοῦ σωθησόμεθα δι᾽ αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τῆς ὀργῆς.

For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

For if ^aawhile we were enemies ^abwe were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by ^achis life.

εἰ γὰρ ἐχθροὶ ὄντες κατηλλάγημεν τῷ θεῷ διὰ τοῦ θανάτου τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ, πολλῷ μᾶλλον καταλλαγέντες σωθησόμεθα ἐν τῇ ζωῇ αὐτοῦ·

Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received ^adreconciliation.

οὐ μόνον δέ, ἀλλὰ καὶ καυχώμενοι ἐν τῷ θεῷ διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, δι᾽ οὗ νῦν τὴν καταλλαγὴν ἐλάβομεν.
